History: The Black West & Slavery

Paintings by Hank Kearsley

Exhibit: January 14 - March 4, 2012

Homesteaders-(Trail-To-Freedom).jpg

Hank Kearsley is an artist and educator who blends aesthetic and historical issues into a strong social vision. His life spans an America prior to the 1960's civil rights movement through an America still struggling with racism and oppression. In Kearsley’s paintings, figures and backgrounds are built from simplified bold graphic shapes with richly layered surfaces of pure color applied in various techniques, one over another. The beauty, dignity, and pathos of these often formal portraits, set in story telling backgrounds, compel one to look long, question and absorb our collective history.
